The next weekend I was privileged to join Mike in one of his favorite spots on earth, Jackson Hole. We made a sweet weekend vacation with Danny, Haley, and Joe. Because we were still dating at this time, we had to have supervision from a married couple. Danny and Haley were our supervisors. Yup, Mike’s little brother was our supervisor. Not that we would have done anything, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Anyways, the trip was a lot of fun. It had been a while since I had been white water rafting. It was really fun, cold but fun. The best part of the river adventure was the Big Kahuna. During low water, it is the biggest rapid. We rode through it like champions then we pulled off to the side. Next go through, we went on our backs. You had to hike back a little ways to a cliff where you could jump into the river. It is freezing cold, when you first get in. But soon the adrenaline is pumping as you make sure you line up properly for the rapid. Then it is just a natural, fun, and crazy water slide. I had never done anything like that before.
Mike also loved showing off for me in his kayak. He showed me how he could surf, roll his kayak, and ride through the rapids like it was nothing. Unfortunately, his confidence may have grown a little too much. He tried to show the whole boat a cool trick, but it backfired on him. On the Snake River, there is a spot where you can throw your paddle deep into the water like a spear. Supposedly the longer it takes to come back the deeper the water is. Well, Mike’s must have had super human strength because his never came back. Mike tried diving for it and searching all over. But it was gone. We felt bad he lost his paddle, but we got a pretty good laugh too.
Later in the trip we also got to go hiking and try some more cliff jumping at Phelps’s Lake. It was more like a big rock, but it was like 20-30 feet up in the air. Mike also had some friends up there at the time. Amy Flanders was up there and we had a lot of fun together. We had an instant connection as friends. She is just so nice and fun to be around. Anyways, at the rock she was nervous to jump. I had her look into my eyes and we counted off together. Yup, she jumped. We all took our turn; Mike was doing lots of cool tricks. He and Danny were jumping off as many times as possible. As you can see, Mike is a man of many talents. Later that night, we headed into town. We ate one of the more famous burger places. There was a Russian lady that was helping us. She loved Mike and was so happy to be serving him. I tried showing off some of my Russian I had learned from Tina, my teammate on the Utah State tennis team. She didn’t like that too much. Mike and I got our food then decided to join the rest of the group. The Russian lady didn’t like that either. It was pretty funny. The trip was a smashing success and we were getting closer and closer all the time.
